Wire Rope Plays Important Role in Rescue of Trapped Miners in Chile

3,280-foot-long wire rope engineered and manufactured by Teufelberger

As people around the world followed the miraculous rescue of the 33 miners who had been trapped over 2,000 feet underground in Chile for more than two months, there probably weren't very many of them who were thinking about the wire rope used to lift and lower the rescue capsule. But without the 3,280-foot-long wire rope, engineered and manufactured in Austria by the Teufelberger Group, the story might not have had such a happy ending.

It was absolutely necessary to prevent any rotation of the capsule during the rescue, and Teufelberger was chosen to supply the rope because of their advanced technology and decades of experience in producing high-performance wire ropes. Teufelberger wasted no time in getting to work, and only a few days after they received the initial request, the rope, weighing almost three tons, was airlifted to Chile and mounted on the winch. As we all know, it did its job well throughout the capsule's more than 33 trips up and down the rescue shaft.
